The Day to Day working of an ALLOTMENT

THE DAY TO DAY WORKINGS OF AN ALLOTMENT SITE IN LANGLEY, BERKSHIRE, UK

For the benefit of visitors who do not know what allotments are - UK Allotments are plots of land rented to individuals to grow vegetables on. There is no standard size but the most common plot is 10 Pole, or 10 Rod these are ancient measurements equivalent to 302 square yards or 253 square metres.

This site has about 68 plots, most of which are being worked. The site is owned by the local council, but the day to day workings are run by our club and committee members.

' LANGLEY ALLOTMENTS & GARDENS ASSOCIATION'.

At this moment we have about 80 members . We also have a Trading Hut on site, where member can buy gardening items . This includes compost, canes, plants, etc. TheTrading hut / shop is open 3 times a week from March and closes Mid November. Through out the year we have events , such as BBQ's,Open days , and a stall at the local carnival where we sell produce and plants for club funds and for a local charity. A newsletter is produced 4 times a year to keep all members up to date with whats going on. The club is open to anyone in the area to belong , you do not have to have an allotment to be a member. The cost for a year is the great sum of £3.

MAIN GATE

Some people are still not locking the main gate; this is a requirement of your Tenancy Agreement with Slough Council which, of course this Association upholds. The only time the gates are left open is when The Trading Hut is open for trading. The opening hours are listed on the main gate. If unwanted people are allowed to enter these allotments and cause damage or steal our produce and equipment we will only have ourselves to blame.

SEEDS AND SEED POTATOES

For those people who have ordered Kings Seeds these should be ready for collection in January 2012. So from about early January please keep a look out on the Trading Hut door for dates and times for collection. For those people who ordered seed we will arrange to contact you by phone or e-mail.

It is hoped that SEED POTATOES will also be available at the same time, again keep an eye on the Trading Hut door for dates and times. Members will be contacted by phone or e-mail .

RUBBISH TIP

Please only put recyclable waste only on the tip as it costs the Council for Normal green waste £30 a tonne when contaminated with anything else e.g. plastic bags etc the costs rises to  £100 a tonne

If we keep putting other waste from our sheds or even bringing waste from home the Council may soon stop collecting the waste.

Then each plot holder will have to remove it themselves, and none of us want that!!!

So please take home any non recyclable waste.
