Fundraisers launch bid to restore fire-hit allotments in Little Sutton
ALMOST a month after arsonists torched five sheds in Little Sutton, volunteers are joining forces to help the much-loved allotments rise from the ashes.
Hundreds of pounds worth of equipment and tools were lost when vandals struck the Cow Lane site last month, leaving gardeners heartbroken.
But undeterred fundraisers are launching a campaign to return the plot to its former glory – starting with a flower sale this weekend.
Ellesmere Port-based charity Holme Care Services will be selling hundreds of summer bedding plants, donated by Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Street Scene department, at the Royal British Legion Club on Saturday.
Executive member for community and environment Cllr Lynn Riley said: “This is a fabulous example of a community coming together to bounce back from what can only be described as a disgraceful and undeserved crime.
“Many of the allotment holders lost all of their equipment and storage in the arson attack and we are delighted to be able to help them gather the funds to rebuild the site.”
The plants have been used in Ellesmere Port and Neston street displays and are perfect to dry out and replant for summer next year.
Local member Cllr Ben Powell said: “The arson attack at the allotment site caused a tremendous amount of damage and it will take time and money to replace everything that was lost.
“I would encourage all local residents to come along next Saturday and spend a pound or two to aid this great community project.”
Allotment steward Ivan Philip thanked the council for its help clearing up the fire-damaged site.
The ‘Big Flower Sale’ will take place at the Royal British Legion Club, Cow Lane, Little Sutton, from 10am-2pm.
