The Day to Day working of an ALLOTMENT

THE DAY TO DAY WORKINGS OF AN ALLOTMENT SITE IN LANGLEY, BERKSHIRE, UK

For the benefit of visitors who do not know what allotments are - UK Allotments are plots of land rented to individuals to grow vegetables on. There is no standard size but the most common plot is 10 Pole, or 10 Rod these are ancient measurements equivalent to 302 square yards or 253 square metres.

This site has about 68 plots, most of which are being worked. The site is owned by the local council, but the day to day workings are run by our club and committee members.

' LANGLEY ALLOTMENTS & GARDENS ASSOCIATION'.

At this moment we have about 80 members . We also have a Trading Hut on site, where member can buy gardening items . This includes compost, canes, plants, etc. TheTrading hut / shop is open 3 times a week from March and closes Mid November. Through out the year we have events , such as BBQ's,Open days , and a stall at the local carnival where we sell produce and plants for club funds and for a local charity. A newsletter is produced 4 times a year to keep all members up to date with whats going on. The club is open to anyone in the area to belong , you do not have to have an allotment to be a member. The cost for a year is the great sum of £3.

Dear Members

THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING WILL BE HELD ON

Tuesday 27th September at 7.30 p.m.  in the Trading Hut

Tea/Coffee will be available.

The seed catalogues are now available in the Trading Hut – shop open Sat and Sun 10- 12

Wed 6 – 7pm

Information for all new members:

As members of the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners (NSALG) we pay £2 of your £3 subscription to them which then allows the Association to be part of the seed scheme run by them.  The Seeds are from Kings Your seeds will be delivered to the shop and we will let you know when they have arrived.

No traipsing round the garden centre!

We would appreciate all seed catalogues being returned by or on the day of the A.G.M.

You will see on the catalogue that there are potatoes and onions and of course if you wish to purchase them you can but we will be buying potatoes in bulk this year and will let everyone know when they arrive.

We anticipate this to be early January 2012. We anticipate purchasing the potatoes from the usual supplier

As we did this year, onions will also be purchased in bulk.

2012 membership begins on the day of the AGM; therefore subscriptions are due on that day.

It would be appreciated if you could keep your membership subscription separate from the seed catalogue as this can be very confusing when the seed order is being collated.

Look forward to seeing you all on 27th September

If you wish to nominate someone as an officer or committee members forms will be available in the trading hut.

Thank you for all of your support throughout the year.

Regards

Anne, Nick and Janice.

Yesterday the Saturday13th August the allotments had an open day and BBQ for the members in the afternoon. The Deputy Mayor paid a visit to our allotments and had a good look around. She was also joined by all  3 of our Ward Councilors. Thank you all for coming.

The open Day was held as part  National Allotment Week , so we thought we would do our bit to encourage the public to take up having an Allotment.

Every year Slough Borough Council holds Allotment competitions for the best allotments , best newcomer etc. This year we had two winners , Alan Benford got second prize - Silver- for best Allotment in the Borough . Karen Hadnett got First prize for Best Newcomer to Allotments.
Well done to the both of you.

The Trading hut was not very busy today, so it gave the people working there time to water all the plants in the greenhouse .

A lot of the plants are on sale at the moment.
Bergonia at 15 pence each, Petunia at 10 pence each. and lots more .

The hanging baskets are for sale at our stall at Langley Carnival on 9th July .
So do came along and get the best hanging baskets in town.

No sign of rain yet so all plot holders are having to water. The problem with that is we can not use hoses at any time of the year, so have to use watering cans and this can take an hour or more to water a plot.

You may have seen my Bedouin Tent ( my new name is Lawrence of the allotments  )  or veg cage.  I have now put in some of the  cabbages etc that I am growing this year.

The ground is still very dry even with watering every evening.

Runner beans in May.
Its only 22 May 2011 and the runner beans on Val and Bobs plot have reached the top of their frame work. The next closest one I have seen is only half way up the frame work, or like mine still at the bottom.

Didn't they do well.

A big thanks to Adrian for strimming around my plot today  and Johns . I will do the same for you when I get the strimmer to work. Which may well be at the end of the year. Keep going Adrian.

Saturday, 21 May 2011

In The Trading Hut today , and a large number of members come in to buy plants. The 2 hours I was in the Hut went very quickly.
In the afternoon I was on my plot watering again. Takes me about and hour to do this every afternoon or evening. Tomorrow my boss ( the wife ) said she is coming to the allotments with me , as she wants to clear up my shed ( see photo ). Thank god I never thought the shed would get cleared up this year.

Jackie and Paul newcomers to our allotments working on their plot.

Eric was also on the allotments today, and to prove it , and that he dose do some work here are the photos.

I was also on the allotments putting up a cage to protect my brassicas, but I think I got carried away.

The chair inside is for me to take it easy when weeding , or to hide .

Charlie Dimmock

The future of allotments secure

Following the request for all members and non-members to voice their opinions on the recent statutory review, the following information is from the DCLG website:

Published
1 May 2011

The Department responds to the claim in the Independent on Sunday that the review of local government's statutory duties could threaten the future of allotments.

A spokesperson for the Department for Communities and Local Government said:

"This is simply untrue we will not remove statutory protections for allotments or any frontline services. However the Government is reviewing old and unnecessary duties imposed on councils in order to free them up from Whitehall red tape and as part of this we have published the full list of duties which includes allotments."

In Prime Minister's Question Time on 4th May 2011:

Mike Gapes (Ilford South) (Lab/Co-op): More than 100 years ago, Parliament legislated to make sure that local authorities provided allotments. Healthy local food is a very good part of good British values. Why therefore are the Prime Minister’s Government scrapping the obligation on local authorities to provide allotments?

The Prime Minister: I was as concerned as the hon. Gentleman when I read that report. I immediately checked, and found that that is not the case. It is extremely important that allotments are made available. Many Members will find that when they ask about that in their constituencies there are massive queues for allotments, as many people want to grow their own vegetables and food and understand more about where food comes from. It is a great movement, and it has my full support.

Our hard work and dedication has been successful and we would like to thank everyone who responded to our letters, emails calling all our members to respond to the review of statutory duties.

We will be vigilant and continue to communicate with the Department for Communities and Local Government and other organisations to safeguard the allotment legislation.

2 weeks ago Derek and June put up a new shed on their plot. Now they are making the plot  even more homely.

A fence around the top end of the plot and a bench to sit on, I do not think they intend to do much work.
It will be sitting on the bench with the G and T's.

I am not sure about the mascot over the door of the shed, it seems to be the wrong football team. I am sure it should be Arsenal  .   Or are they saying it looks like me???
